Honeymoon Island - Paddle to the new cuts

Because of impact of the storms, we will be adjusting the previous trip that was planned for the Caladesi mangrove trails.  We will now explore the new passes around Honeymoon.  Depending on conditions we may just stay on the sound side, but we may loop around and come back on the Gulf side through Hurricane Pass.  Please note that there is some uncertainty on the exact path and time due to the storms, but we will have a great time exploring!  Thanks to Eric Graves for leading this paddle.

If you haven't registered in the past, please register so I know who and how many are planning to attend. I hope you can join us!

Trip Duration:  Timing may vary depending on conditions, but we let's plan on a 4-5 hour trip.  You can obviously turn around earlier if desired.  The estimated timing includes the paddle to/from the causeway to explore the new passes that have formed on Honeymoon Island.   Depending on conditions we may just stay on the sound side, but we may loop around and come back on the Gulf side through Hurricane Pass.  Please note that there is some uncertainty on the exact path and time, but we will have a great time exploring!   We can also pick a spot to stop and take a break/have some lunch along the way.

Starting and ending location:  Next to Sail Honeymoon (on the right side as you face the water) on the Causeway (61 Causeway Blvd, Dunedin)

Rentals are available at Sail Honeymoon (sailhoneymoon.com).

Please register so we have a good headcount and waivers completed.

Bring:  beverage, lunch, especially if planning the long route, sun screen, bug spray (hopefully not needed), and anything else for a fun trip!

The trip:

Leaving from the causeway at 10:30 AM.   Estimating a return by 3:00 pm.

  • We will go under the small bridge and paddle our way along the sound side of Honeymoon Island.

  • Let's explore any new passes that have been created.

  • If conditions allow, we can cross at a pass and then work our way along the Gulf side back through Hurricane Pass and back to the starting point.

  • We can stop along the way for a break/lunch and talk a little bit about the history of Caladesi/Honeymoon, including the Scharrer Homestead,  Henry Scharrer, and his family, including Myrtle (daughter).   We will plan a trip to the actual Homestead in the future!  If you have read Myrtle’s book, Yesteryear I Lived In Paradise, it adds to the trip...and they are currently on sale at the downtown bookstore (Back in The Day Books).
